The another day I was on duty from 2pm-10pm. The first 7 hours was so quiet no patients came in. Until at 9:45pm here comes the Rescue 911. They brought in a patient who already delivered at home and the placenta was already out. Patient had prenatal check-ups in our clinic. Baby was fine no problem except the baby was cold. The patient was also doing great. No bleeding. She was sutured because she had a 1st degree laceration. The next day she came back for mother-baby check. Two of them were doing great.
Baby in the womb
This is me doing prenatal with my cousin who is 39 weeks gestation. It is a great honor to be her midwife. It’s so special. We are so excited to see the baby. It is really a wonderful adventure to finally see the baby when she/he comes out.
A Love affair with children starts the moment they are born. For some of us, it begins even earlier. The closeness of carrying a baby in the womb makes separation seem strange.
PRICE is the right treatment
Just after new year, my sister had a motorcycle accident. She almost broke her leg. Thanks God she only had sprain on her knee. It made her knee very swollen. The PRICE treatment did help. Now she is able to walk without any support.
“Sprain” is used to describe a wide range of injuries. But a true sprain involves damage to ligaments, the bands of elastic like tissue that support joints by connecting the bones. Sprains can often be treated with simple home-care measures. However, there are times you should see medical attention.
To treat a minor soft-tissue injury, remember the letters PRICE, which stand for Protection, Rest, Ice, Compression and Elevation.
• Protection – protect your joint from further injury. An elastic wrap, brace, sling, air-cast, cane or crutches may help support the joint that cause pain or swelling.
• Ice – cold reduces swelling and inflammation, decreases muscle spasms and helps relieve pain.
Apply ice or an ice pack with a dry towel or a blanket for insulation. Apply ice for no more than 20 minutes at a time, several times a day. Don’t apply heat, which can cause more swelling. If you have vascular disease, rheumatism or decreased sensation, talk to your doctor before applying ice.
• Compression – this decreases bruising and swelling. Keep the joint wrapped until swelling subsides. Keep the wrap snug but not tight. Loosen if pain increases or you have numbness.
• Elevation – raising a swollen joint above the level of your heart reduces swelling. This is especially important at night.
Continue the PRICE treatment as long as it helps. You may want to take acetaminophen (Tylenol) for pain or nonaspirin anti-inflammatory drug, such as ibuprofen (advil, motrin), for pain and inflammation (aspirin may slightly increase risk of bleeding).
Odd cravings point to iron-deficiency
In my field of work most common problem of pregnant women is anemia. I did about 15 prenatal check-up and 70 % of them are anemic. There is what we call physiologic anemia which means it is normal for a pregnant women that thier iron or hemoglobin level is lowered during pregnancy. There are those many who have lower hemoglin than normally they should have. People with iron-deficiency anemia may develop strong cravings to eat dirt, rice, ice, paint, starch, raw potatoes or tomatoes. Such cravings are called pica (PIE-Kuh). If you experience an unusual craving, tell your doctor about it. A simple blood test can show whether you have an iron deficiency. Other symptoms of iron-deficiency anemia include fatigue, pallor, cracks in the sides of your mouth and brittle nails. They also complain of difficulty of breathing by just walking a short distance. We are doing our best to help them to have thier hemoglobin level with in normal limits.
Exercise as a diagnostic tool

The rigors of a work out function as a whole-body stress test that can reveal an array of serious medical conditions that might otherwise go undiagnosed and untreated.
For example, the headaches that plagued a 57-year-old man shortly after the start of vigorous physical activity actually signalled the presence of blocked coronary arteries. The Physician and Sportsmedicine, a professional journal, described this and an assortment of other case histories of exercise-induced red flags:
• Fatigue and poor athletic performance: a possible sign of anemia.
• A noticeable drop in speed and nimbleness: Parkinson’s disease.
• Abdominal cramping and diarrhea: inflammation of the colon.
• A severe headache or incoherence: a brain tumor.
• Repeated bouts of tendinitis: hypothyroidism.
Granted, many workout-related aches, pains, and other ailments stem from nothing more than an over ambitious attempt to cram a week’s worth of exercise into a single session at the gym. But any symptom that’s unusual, intense, or persistent merits prompt medical attention. Exercise may be intended to promote health, but don’t ignore its ability to uncover illness.
Baby your back
Most of us experiences back pains. It is not fun to have them. Delivering babies sometimes made my back hurts. So we need to baby our back and give them a break.
If you’re a working adult, the odds are fifty-fifty that you’ll suffer back trouble. To help you avoid this wrenching experience, the American College of Occupational and Environmental Medicine recommends the following back-saving strategies on the job:
• Alternate between sitting and standing. When sitting, rest your feet flat on the floor, and use a chair with good back support. When standing for prolonged periods, rest one foot on a low stool.
• As you lift heavy objects, hold them close to your chest; bend your knees, not your back; and reposition our entire body rather than twisting or reaching as you lift.
• Split heavy loads into smaller loads, and get help when an object is too heavy or awkward to lift by yourself.
• To help protect your back overnight – or whenever you lie down – use a firm mattress, and lie on your back or side, not on your stomach.
• When driving, adjust the seat to keep your knees level with your hips, sit up straight with both hands on the wheel, and use a lumbar support for your lower back. Keep vehicles in good repair to minimize vibration. Take frequent rest breaks to change position and stretch.
Four legs can be better than two
Once considered frivolous accessories, walking and trekking sticks are becoming popular on hiking trails. They’re used to improve balance, posture, and the cardiovascular benefits of walking. Available options range from humble wooden sticks to high-tech telescoping poles.
Both walking sticks and poles can improve your balance and reduce the risk of falls and injuries. A small study at Oklahoma State University found that volunteers tested on a stability platform significantly improved their balancing ability when they used one or two hiking sticks. Using two sticks was best, especially when volunteers carried the added load of a backpack.
Poles can also increase the aerobic benefits of walking. The effect is similar to carrying hand weights, though the poles are usually lighter, so there’s less chance of injuries. Poles may be beneficial for anyone with ankle, knee, or hip problems, because they support some body weight, placing less stress on the spine and lower extremities.
Vitamin A needs for one-year-old
At 12 months, your child’s color vision is still maturing. So as he moves from milk to table food, make sure that he gets the right amount of Vitamin A.
